Spring break is a great time for the family to have some fun in the sun. Keep you and your family safe while at the Beach or in the sun by following these simple tips:

Safety for Kids

  • Choose waterproof  sunscreen that is made for children, amd reapply every 2 hours.
  • Rub sunscreen in well, making sure to cover all exposed areas. Paying special attention to the face, nose, ears, feet and hands, and backs of the knees.
  • Put on sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun.
  • Reapply sunscreen after swimming, perspiring, and toweling off.
  • Apply sunscreen to the scalp.
  • Check the sunscreen’s expiration date.
  • Wear wide-brimmed hats, long sleeved shirts, and pants
  • Use sunglasses with UV protection for protecting your child’s eyes.
  • Try and prevent direct contact with the sun dring the hours at which it is at it’s highest (between 10 am and 4 pm).
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible.
  • Use sun protection even on cloudy days.
  • When choosing a sunscreen, look for the words “broad-spectrum” on the label,  it means that the sunscreen will screen out both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) rays.
  • To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water, non-carbonated drinks, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards. Lifeguards are trained to identify potential hazards.
  • Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard-protected beach.
  • Be aware of rip currents. If you should get caught in a current, don’t try to swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until clear of the current.
  • Seek shelter in case of storm. Get out of the water in case of lightning.

What about Babies?

  • Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight.
  • It is okay to apply a small amount of sunscreen on infants under 6 months if there is no way to avoid the sun.
  • Make sure the car is cooled off before you go for a ride.
  • Dress babies in lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs, and use brimmed hats.
  • Offer your baby plenty of liquids (breast milk or formula provides plenty of hydration; don’t offer water before 6 months)
  • Protect your baby from the heat as well as the sun.
  • Keep your baby in the shade whenever possible.
